V12 Aircraft Engine - 12-12-12 is the perfect opportunity to shake off the pre-holiday stress and celebrate a mighty V12. Here's a look at the many different tasks the V12 has accomplished in the past - both automotive and otherwise.

The A8 W12 may not be as flashy as the S8, but the silky-smooth 12-cylinder earns it a spot on our list. In the Audi, it displaces 6.3 liters and makes around 500 horsepower. The power plant consists of two Volkswagen VR6 engines with a common crank and four camshafts.

Due to its size, there is no room in the engine bay for a front differential, which means this W12 setup can only be run in a rear-wheel-drive configuration. That's fine with us. Variants were used on the Bentley Continental GT, Flying Spur, some Spyker models and the old VW Phaeton.

Two American-made, American-developed Allison V-1710s sit side-by-side in the mighty P-38 Lightning fighter jet. They're turbocharged and supercharged, if you want to use technical terms. This 1,000 hp unit is also used in the Bell P-39 Airacobra, Curtiss P-40 Warhawk and our own P-15 Mustang. A smaller naturally aspirated version was also used, but performed worse at higher altitudes. It was retired when the new jet fighter arrived, but in Indianapolis until 70,000 were built.

The DB 605 is another engine that was used in World War II, but on the other side of the battlefield. It was used on the Messerschmitt Bf 109, Bf 110 and Me 210C heavy fighters from 1942 to 1945. Two DB 605s formed the DB 610, which played a role in the German heavy bomber Heinkel He 177.

With a displacement of 35.7 liters and an increased bore, it was rated at 1,455 horsepower. It spawned 10 or so variants and was itself an updated version of the DB 601.

The Klimov was used on Soviet aircraft such as the Yak-3, Yak-9 and MiG-7 aircraft during World War II. It had little in common with its Russian predecessors (M-105 and VK-106), and more power was provided by four valves per cylinder and modified cams and cranks. The engine is difficult to service because its exhaust headers are located inboard of the cylinder banks.

Output is rated at 1,650 at takeoff and 1,450 at 12,500 feet. It's also supercharged and liquid-cooled, and has a lifespan of just 25 hours.

The Liberty L-12 was a 27-liter V12 engine designed a few months after the United States entered World War I. Jesse G. Vincent and E.J. Hall of Packard were called to Washington to produce an aircraft engine that could compete with the best in the world. The engine required a high power-to-weight ratio and was suitable for mass production.

By July 1917, Packard's Detroit factory assembled a V8 prototype, and in August, a 12-cylinder version was tested and approved. Liberty L-12s were installed on Douglas, Curtiss and other aircraft, as well as some British tanks.

The Lamborghini Aventador's 6.5-liter V12 is one of our favorites for its absurdity. The flame-breathing engine in the Aventador bull (known internally as the LP700-4) produces 700 horsepower. - hence the name - and 509 lb-ft of torque.

Sant'Agata starts with a blank slate for the new unit. Light weight is important, as is thermal management. The V12 engine has a 60-degree cylinder bank angle and measures just 26 inches from top to bottom, including the intake system. It produces a whopping 107 horsepower. per liter without turbocharging or supercharging.

The flagship of Aston Martin's Vantage range is the 510 horsepower, 6.0-liter V12 coupe. "Amazingly powerful" - Aston's words, not ours - the engine is one of the few 12-cylinders currently available with a true manual transmission. The plant is hand-built at Aston Martin's engine factory in Cologne, Germany. Another naturally aspirated unit, Aston's V12 plays low and high in the rev range.

The sprint to 62 mph comes in 4.2 seconds and top speed is 190 mph. At 85 per litre, it's still in the upper tier of modern engines.

First developed in 1933, the 27-liter liquid-cooled Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 aircraft engine holds a special place in history for its pivotal role in World War II. A wide range of Allied aircraft—including the Bristol Beaufighter II, Hawker Hurricane, and Supermarine Spitfire—were powered by V12 engines producing more than 1,500 horsepower. (Actual output varies with altitude).

Packard built a version of that engine under license, called the V-1650, a contribution to the war effort that helped Detroit earn the nickname "Arsenal of Democracy."

Suffice it to say that the Merlin V12 helped the Allies win World War II. It's a nice bonus for being an absolutely evil powerhouse.

Nearly eight years after its introduction, the streamlined 1936 Lincoln Zephyr still has more style and presence than anything the brand has produced in recent memory. The Lincoln Zephyr's 267 cubic inch L-head V12 shared heritage with Ford's flat-head V8 and made 110 horsepower, ensuring the car had plenty of muscle to support its Art Deco style.

As the name suggests, Jerrari - or more accurately, Jerraris - is the brainchild of casino mogul Bill Harrah's half-Jeep, half-Ferrari. The first-generation Jerrari paired a Ferrari 365 front end with a 1969 Jeep Wagoneer rear end. The result is less elegant, which may explain why the second version keeps more of the look. The key to both, however, is the high-revving 4.4-litre Ferrari Colombo V12 that sits under the hood. The whole concept is crazy, but not like . . .

What's better than a V12? Obviously, the answer is four V12s. Gar Wood's Miss America X, a speedboat powered by four supercharged Packard V12 aircraft engines, reached a top speed of 124.86 mph in 1932. That was enough to break the stillwater speed record and maintain Wood's celebrity status. We bet that sounds incredible too.

The Mercedes-Benz SL65 isn't as light as it used to be, but with a 6-liter V12, the driver won't even notice. The new model debuted in May with 621 horsepower. and 738 lb-ft of pavement-shredding twist. It pushes the highway to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds before reaching a final speed of 186 mph. Ludicrously, the car now includes eco-mode and stop/start technology. Power peaks at 103.5 hp (albeit a boost) at 4,800 rpm. Per liter, this is a rebuilt WWII-era Allison V-1710 V12 aircraft engine currently selling for Buy It Now on eBay. $37,500.

The Allison V-1710 was the only liquid-cooled V12 aircraft engine developed in the United States to serve during World War II. It operates a number of important aircraft, including early versions of the P-51 Mustang and the Lockheed P-38 Lightning.

The Allison V12 would go down as one of the greatest aircraft engines of World War II and would enjoy a long second life after the war, both in aviation and professional motorsports.

The engine was developed in 1929 as a new engine for a new generation of fighters and bombers, capable of higher speeds, higher altitudes, higher payloads and longer flight times.

The original plan was to use the engine in the three main aircraft types, the streamlined bomber, fighter jet and rigid airship, the USS Akron and USS Macon.

In the end, both airships were lost in accidents before their engines could be ready, and the USS Akron was destroyed in a major storm off the New Jersey coast in 1933, killing 73 of the 76 people on board.

Two years later, in 1935, the USS Macon was destroyed in similar circumstances when it was damaged in a storm and lost off California's Great South Coast.

The real home for the then-new Allison V-1710 would be American fixed-wing aircraft. The Allison engine was installed on the North American P-51 Mustang, Lockheed P-38 Lightning, Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, North American F-82 Twin Mustang and an early version of the Bell P-39 Viper . .

The original naturally aspirated engine proved unsuitable for working at heights, so it was replaced by a Packard V-1650 engine, essentially a British Rolls-Royce Merlin engine built under license in the United States.

The original version of the V-1710 was capable of 1,000 bhp, and later forced-induction versions were much more powerful, up to 2,900 bhp.

After the war, thousands of surplus Allison engines from the military flooded the civilian market, and they were soon used in motorsports, especially drag racing, land speed racing, tractor pulling and unlimited seaplane racing.
